Compare domain costs before you register

A low first-year price can hide a much higher renewal bill. Compare the same domain, currency and registration term at each registrar before deciding. The registration buttons on a domain page open the configured partners; this guide does not rank them by commission.

Check these five things at checkout

  1. Registration and renewal: write down both prices. Check whether a coupon is limited to new customers or one domain.
  2. Total payable: include tax, registry or ICANN fees, currency conversion and any mandatory minimum term.
  3. Premium domains: a registry-unregistered domain can still cost more than the advertised extension price. Check its renewal price too.
  4. Privacy: check whether your extension supports it and whether it remains free at renewal.
  5. Optional extras: hosting, email and security products are separate choices. You do not need to buy them to reserve a domain.

Think beyond the first year

For a three-year planning estimate, add the first-year checkout total to two years of renewal costs, including applicable fees. This is an estimate, not a locked quote: future renewal rates can change. A prepaid multi-year offer may use a different calculation.

Do I need hosting now?

You can reserve a domain before choosing how to build the website. First decide whether you need a blog, store, portfolio or custom application. Compare the platform's total cost, export options, custom-domain support and maintenance requirements before buying hosting. There is no single best host for every project.
